Challenging rules is important if you want to unstick your organization. Organizational development occurs in phases. The first phase is when the company is founded. The second phase is when rules are instituted to solve problems. The third phase is when rules just accumulate without ever being evaluated or modified. To break out of the third phase, it sometimes takes a revolution. Challenging the rules matters most during innovation. Following the rules means adhering to preexisting processes. It’s hard to be innovative when you’re actively trying not to deviate from past performance. The Hogan Personality Inventory's Prudence scale describes a person’s relationship to rules. A high Prudence score means you’re likely to follow and enforce rules. A low Prudence score means you’re likely to challenge and break rules. How do you innovate? Misbehave a little.
